Ring…ring…ring…
Stomach in knots, Nadia slowly reached for the phone.
“Hello?”
Silence.
“Hello, who is this? What do you want?”
Silence.
“Not again!”
Her knotted stomach sent a salty taste to her mouth.
Slamming down the phone, she ran to the bathroom. Her clammy hands gripped the hard gray marble sink. She raised her head but didn’t recognize the face staring back at her. Just a hollow shell remained of the fun-loving girl she had been.
She tucked a strand of long brown hair behind her ear and wiped her moist, deep brown, empty-looking eyes. She breathed one slow, controlled breath at time until her rattled nerves settled down.
This was getting the best of her.
She forced her feet to carry her back to bed. The soft, purple, satin sheet brushed against her skin as she pulled it up over her. She stared at the ceiling. Thoughts of her simple childhood flooded her memory. Why couldn’t things be like that again? Finally her mind could no longer fight off the sleep her body craved. Her eyelids fought against the downward pull. They lost.
